Twitter has always been a favorite of mine. On the 5th of March 2010 I joined Twitter, it was the second social media site I joined after Facebook and like many others who use the Twitter for the first time I was not really sure what it was and how to use it.
After my first tweet, and a couple of others, reading the thoughts of local and international celebrities, authors, leaders and other people that previously I did not have access to I was hooked.
Similarly a lot of other Zimbabweans are signing up on Twitter in droves. While the user-base might not approach the levels of Facebook, Twitter’s popularity and power is on par with the Social Media behemoth that Zuckerberg started.
What makes Twitter fascinating and intriguing?
Twitter has become the new gateway for information and breaking news. No longer do we depend on traditional media and newspapers as a current source for information. The rise in the use of smart phones for publishing has meant that anyone can become a publisher and a news agent. Using a smart phone one can easily type in a story, capture an image, record a video, upload it on a blog and share it on Twitter and Voila! The content starts getting shared. Strive Masiyiwa’s first Tweet was announcing Econet’s victory in a Lagos Court.
Traditional Media and Newspapers source content from Twitter
Traditional media channels and Newspapers frequently feeding on Twitter as a source of News shows how tables have turned. It’s now common practice for big brands to announce breaking news on Twitter and have Traditional media channels report and quote Tweets. United Kingdom’s Royal family announced the birth of Prince George (son to Prince William and Kate) on Twitter and it was picked up by international news channels and papers. Recently a leading newspaper reported a story about former Big Brother Housemate Pokello after picking a quote on Twitter.

Why you should increase your Twitter Following
Twitter works a bit differently to Facebook in that on Twitter there is no algorithm to filter posts or updates like Facebook’s EdgeRank Algorithm which determines which posts you see and those you don’t. On Twitter it is the wild wild west. There is no restriction to who can see your tweets as long as they follow you or search the tweets.
Personally I grow my following so that I can increase the audience of the people who see my blog posts. If you want to have more people seeing your Tweets then it will be wise to increase your following.
Tip – Grow your following organically
The best followers are the ones that are interested in your Tweets. The ones that will respond and converse with you when you share something. Buying followers will not work. Infact, a lot of times there are fake followers. I use the following tricks to grow my following:
#1 I follow followers of people with similar interests to mine using a tool called Tweepi.com. There is a silent ettiqutte rule on Twitter where if someone follows you, they are obliged to follow you back. It works try it!
#2 Share quality content – People love good content. When you share good content regularly people want to follow you.
#3 ReTweet other people’s Tweets.
