7 Reasons Why Blogging Can Change Your Life and Career

Blogging seems to be one of the latest catchwords around. If you are reading this article chances are either you are a blogger or at least thinking of starting a blog.  Or maybe you are just curious and want to quench your curiosity.

Blogging is a cutting edge communications platform much the way colour TV was in the late 80s and early 90s.

It’s always fun being on the cutting edge.

I remember how a lot of people used to huddle around a neighbours TV to see their favourite TV show in colour or watch Brett the “The Hitman” take on Shawn Michaels during WWF wrestling. Some of you are old enough to remember this.

Blogging is gradually becoming mainstream as a lot of people are slowly awakening to its power and impact. Blogging has been greatly assisted by the coming on of social media platforms. Social media has smoothed and brought blogging to the forefront.

So why bother to blog?

A blog provides a perfect vehicle to write, post photos and videos, and with the rise of the social web, blogging is providing the perfect foundation for people to spread their ideas and share their expertise.

Blogging helps you find your voice.

People blog for more different reasons. Blogs that started small are now mainstream media.

Whilst there will always be people like Larry Kwirirayi of the lifestyle and entertainment blog 3-Mob who say they gravitated towards writing from an early age and it was a natural extension of their innate abilities.

I am convinced anyone can blog. It’s simply a matter of finding your passion and marrying it with your talent. Life should be joyous and finding early in life work that is play will turn an underachiever to a happy warrior.

So how can blogging help you transform your life and possibly your career? Here are some of the ways.

1. Position yourself as an Expert or Thought leader

To be successful in any field, industry or endeavour one of your goals should be able to get to a point where you are recognised as an expert in your field. You can choose to be recognised for a certain discipline, whether it is Baking, Cooking, Entertainment or whatever field you like.

Blogging is a great way to display your special skill or knowledge around a certain subject or field.

When you position yourself as an expert with useful information, people will always have a need for that information and will gravitate towards you as customers or clients or just a following.

2.  Build Trust

Turn the mirror on yourself for a moment and think about why you buy things you do or make the choices you do to sign up for that baking course or do business with someone. Trust is an important factor of that equation.

The higher the trust the more likely someone is willing to do business with you.

Blogging facilitates the building of that Trust.

 3. Clarifies thoughts

Do you ever struggle to put across your ideas floating in your head to your boss or in meetings or at gatherings?

Writing is a great way to organise thoughts and share ideas.

Sitting down and distilling your thoughts and ideas and structuring them into sentences and paragraphs is an art that requires practise.

4.  Build Relationships

Blogging is a great way to meet people. Blogging has allowed to me to build and cultivate relationships that have made the struggle of wrangling and wrestling with words totally worth it.

I have made friends from all over the world and conversed with influential people that I wouldn’t have met doing the things I normally do.

5. Blogging Creates Opportunity

Famed blogger Chris Brogan nailed when he wrote, “Every time you post, you build an opportunity. It might be for making business. It might be for sharing thought leadership. It might the chance of to build some new relationships.

Mechanically, it might just be another attempt to gain better organic ranking from Google. But each post is an opportunity.”

6.  Source of Income

What may start out as a hobby might end up being rewarding financially and being a source of income for many. As Confucius said:

Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.

A lot of people go through life trying to figure out how to make money and have fun at the same time. How rewarding would that be? You can do it too.

7. Reach out and Amplify Humanity

I love educating and entertaining people. I-am-the-sit-around-a-fire and tell stories kinda guy. Sometimes I write case studies, tell stories and other times I do interviews. Sometimes I try to entertain them whilst making them learn more about a subject like I did with this article here.

But all of this is about humanity, reaching out to humanity, sharing with them my creativity and uniqueness. You too can share your humanity with others.

To Your Blogging

Wrapping up it is not only about the rewards that matter but the journey.  As you wrestle with words and images in your blogging journey, remember it is more about self-discovery and growth. I have no doubt that your life will be changed and career enhanced as a result of blogging.

Very informative indeed. What websites can one use for designing one’s blog or webpage?

I personally find WordPress to be a good platform as you can scale and customise it easily. It’s also easy to set up. But you also use Medium or LinkedIn which guarantee an audience.
