“Give me a lever long enough and a place to stand, and I will single-handledly shift the world” Archimedes.
Social Media is a lever long enough to radically shift our how we connect, build relationships and share ideas and stories. We are no longer are we limited by the tyranny of traditional media to get our thoughts, ideas and stories out. All you now need is your phone and internet and you can do your publishing. When social media is mentioned in boardrooms, most Executives squirm and wriggle uncomfortably in their chairs as the terms Facebook and Twitter are brought up.
Fortunately, not every executive is ill at ease with Social Media as we have found out, with Econet’s Executive Chairman and Founder taking to Facebook like a duck to water. Adding at least 41 thousand new fans every month. Strive Masiyiwa Facebook page is by far the fastest growing Page in Zimbabwe.
Build a Tribe not a following
Social Networks are the new place to find tribes. From the earliest of times, humans have always sought to belong to a tribe. People needed a sense of belonging and they still do. A place where there are connected by a leader or an idea. With the right motivation and message one can easily build a tribe.
By sharing Econet’s origin’s story, the trials and sufferings, challenges and hardships, Strive struck a chord that resonated with a lot of people and allowed him to build a tribe of followers. His message of Hope and Success is one that reverberates with Africa’s Youth. His audience is engaged and active. They amplify his messages through Shares and Likes, expanding his reach.
Provide Help not Hype
People are a hard act to please; they expect the best, or so we have been told. But, what if I told you that this isn’t necessarily true. That people do not necessarily want the best, but want a solution. Want help. Instead of being the best and amazing at what you do, what if you could just be helpful. Strive provides mentoring and leadership which is sorely lacking in Africa. He might not be the best teacher out there. He might not have attended any training courses to teach and train. He doesn’t need to. He has been there and done it. People trust him. Social Media allows you to build trust slowly but surely. What have you done that others can learn from? Choose your platform, and start teaching others and build trust.
Take Bold Action with Social Media
History has shown that fortune favours the bold. Humanity has been stirred forward by people who have set out to create a dent in the universe. When social media is suggested to executives they writhe, twist and squirm but not Strive. He is by far the most high profile executive active on Social Media in Africa. Where others fear to tread, he plods.
Which channels are your customers, future business partners and employers using? Take bold action to go where tread where others fear to plod.
What about you?
Evidently you are not Strive Masiyiwa and admittedly you do not have a powerful brand like Econet backing you, but the principles apply to each and every one. In fact social media has democratised the balance of power, anyone can now be a publisher and everyone can become an authority. There is nothing stopping you from creating and building a strong online brand in whatever field or industry.
